Until we met with a local school principal to ask what the
most urgent needs were for her school (see “History”), we never knew homeless children were at
serious risk of going hungry all weekend.
We never knew homeless children often didn’t
have access to meals on the weekend was what we heard over and over from the
generous people who packed backpacks for us during the first two years of our
program. (Please note that those same people donate to
their churches to now financially support the larger program.)
There are no homeless children
said a man to a volunteer collecting funds for our program at a community
festival. There was no convincing him
otherwise.
We are spreading the word so that everyone knows that there are homeless children,
presently in Baltimore City over 2,700 and counting, and that they are in
distress due to nutritional voids in their weekends.
And we are spreading the word that there are solutions to
this important problem and it comes down to funding, not even a lot of funding
compared to all the dollars that go into other programs. Just $20 per backpack per week distributed
during the school year feeds the students and their families.
Please spread the word and help us by contributing (see
“Donate”).
